
Airworthiness Engineer (Systems Specialist) (Reston)

As we build a new team in Reston, VA, we're looking for engineers and technologists ready to be pioneers in the application of emerging tools and techniques, maintaining the highest reliability demanded by aerospace while bringing forth new products and capabilities at a brisk pace.
This is an onsite position in our Reston, VA office location. To conform to U.S. export control regulations, applicant should be eligible for any required authorization from the U.S. Government.
As an Airworthiness Engineer (Systems Specialist), your key responsibilities include:
- Prepare the certification plans for CMC Electronics products in collaboration with the product development teams. These plans establish the Certification Basis and lead to TSO design approval from regulatory agencies.
- Serve as primary point of contact between CMC Electronics and the regulatory authority for the avionics product certification.
- Lead presentations to Certification Authorities (i.e. Concept briefings, Type Board Meetings).
- Responsible for managing avionics safety/compliance for certification activities of various subsystems using guidance of SAE ARP 4761/4754A
- Ensure that the contractual and derived system and safety requirements are achieved by the design team. Define requirements necessary to prevent mishaps or control risk throughout the system life cycle.
- Assess the impact of design, manufacturing, maintenance and operational procedures on system safety.
- Participate in internal/external design reviews and peer reviews of system documentation (such as specifications, development plans, technical manuals, etc.) to ensure product development complies with the certification basis and other airworthiness standards.
- Deliver the declaration attesting to the demonstration of conformity with its certification basis. Prepare and submit the draft Type Certficate Data Sheet to be issued by the Certification Authority.
- For already certified products, review and approve Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (including system-level Engineering Change Orders, Service Bulletins, etc.) and ensure the product continues to meet its certification basis.
- Performs all other tasks as assigned.
How to excel in this role (job requirements):
- Bachelor of Engineering degree from a recognized university (Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in Engineering)
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a high-technology airworthiness certification environment for civil and/or military aerospace programs
- Knowledge of Civil Airborne Safety System standards; SAE ARP 4761 & 4754A
- Technical expertise in Electrical, Avionic and Electronic systems
- Strong communication and technical writing skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Dynamic and innovative team player

- 10+ years of relevant experience in a high-technology civil aviation TSO-certification environment
- Knowledge of Civil Airborne Safety Standards AC 2X.1309, MIL-HDBK-882 and MIL-HDBK217F
- GPS or FMS product knowledge
