Software Architect (Sugar Grove, IL)

This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager for Core Products and collaborates with the Business Development Manager (BDM) and Chief System Engineer to design and enhance CMC's core products. A strong background in software and hardware design, along with expertise in integrating modern and legacy systems and understanding relevant technology trends, is essential for this role. You will be accountable for the product’s design and must communicate your technical roadmap effectively to all levels of the engineering organization. Additionally, you'll collaborate with the manufacturing team to improve product yield and sustainability.

 

As Software Architect, your key responsibilities include:

  •           Technical Design and Specifications: You will lead the technical design, scope, and specifications of the product. You will work with the chief system engineer to ensure the system-level requirements meet customer and certification standards.
  •  Act as the Engineering Design Authority: Ensure engineering efforts align with the technical roadmap. Provide input for product obsolescence if needed.
  • Be responsible for project technical execution. All designers on the project will report to the HW architect, including mechanical and electrical engineers, and PCB designers.
  • Technological Industry Trends: Keep current with evolving technology trends, regulatory requirements, and the competitive landscape. Evaluate new technologies to improve the product’s scalability and performance, or generate productivity, based on customer’s views of the future of avionics. Help define next generation products such as next-gen computer or graphical modules.

  • Support Bids & Proposals: Responsible for all hardware estimates coming from the Core Product team for new programs.  Challenge the team to develop robust technical solutions that will effectively assist the BDM in winning the bid.

  • Customer Relationship: Build strong connections with technical counterparts at partners and customers.

To join our team, you must:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer or electrical engineering, or related technical field; MBA or equivalent business education is an asset.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant technical experience in the aerospace industry, with extensive knowledge of Mission Computers and civil and military markets.
  • Experience in product ownership throughout its lifecycle and managing an engineering team of at least 10 people.
  • Customer-facing experience in the aviation industry for both civil and military sectors.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes according to aviation standards.
  • Proven ability to forecast market and technology trends, identify future opportunities, and align strategies for success.
  • Exposure to various engineering disciplines, including but not limited to, electronics, software, firmware, algorithms, mechanical.
  • Capable of conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences effectively and influence different levels of the organization up to the President/CEO.
  • Ability to think big picture, understanding the customer’s needs and coming up with viable technical solutions.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with customer focus and continuous improvement.
  • Familiar with SAR ARP4754 and/or ISO/IEC/IEEE-15288 System Engineering process is an asset.
  • Understanding of Airworthiness standards such as DO-178, DO-254, DO-160, MIL-STD, is an asset.
  • Eligible for Canadian Controlled Goods Program and NATO Secret security clearance. Candidate must be eligible to gain clearance to assess ITAR control goods.
  • Experience in requirements capture and management using DOORS (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of civil and/or military specification standards and practices: ARP4754, ARP4761, DO-178 (or equivalent), DO-254, DO-297 an advantage.
  • Prior experience with these avionics systems an advantage: Display Systems, FMS, GPS, TCAS, TAWS, WXR, SVS, Audio Systems, Moving map.
  • Working knowledge of FAA TSO, FARs, TC and STC regulations and procedures an advantage.
  • Certification FAR PART 23/25 related experience an advantage.

To excel in this role, you must have:

  •     Design authority for all Mission System products. Including CMA-5000, VPU-3000, PU-3000, SMFD-3068, CMA-2041 (MFD).
  • ·        Responsible for all HW estimates coming from Core Hardware group for new programs

    o    Work with product architects and business development managers to understand customer Request For Proposal and assign requirements to functional groups

    o    Ensure that HW Architecture is being done in conjunction with Platform Architect

    o    Ensure proper alignment of products to conform to the Platform reference design to minimize cost and schedule

    o    HW OEDP describing the HW, AEH, Mechanical, Electrical technical solution

    o    Work with AEH, Mechanical, ECAD, Electrical, HQE, test Engineering and Airworthiness teams to define solution and formalize estimates

    o    Capture estimates using proven templates for LRU development

  •      Provide technical guidance as Design authority to designers when working on Mission System products, including all AEH, MCAD, ECAD, Electrical designers
  • ·          Involved in product roadmap defining next generation products such as GPM2 and CPM2 in conjunction with Platform Architect and product managers
  •      Technically support Customer pursuits, including creating technical proposals
  •      Review of the Customer statement of work and design needs to ensure the proposed solution meets the requirements. Requires regular design reviews with the customer throughout the program.
  •      Conduct trade-off studies on advanced avionics system architectures and make recommendations on architectures.
