The Network and system Administrator Class 2 works under minimal supervision from the Manager, IT Infrastructure and Operations or a Network and System Administrator Class 1. They are responsible for maintaining the integrity and security of servers and systems that support the various units and groups within the company. They are also responsible for supporting all operational systems of the company. They must perform analysis and development, with limited supervision and guidance from professional staff, to ensure systems are kept up to date with technological advancements.
They maintain the company’s servers and inform professional and operational staff about the functioning of the Windows platform, both in the server and client-server environment. They are responsible for coordinating communication between the user community and the IT technical functions regarding server operations. They serve as a key technical resource for other IT team members, offering knowledge, advice, and support for various projects. Additionally, they work closely with IT management to evaluate current systems.
TASKS
- Provide technical leadership for the company.
- Participate in IT group activities by providing reports, monitoring, and communicating issues to the user community.
- Work autonomously to support all servers providing services to the company.
- Oversee server management activities, including priorities, planning, and changes to servers.
- Maintain critical services such as DNS, SMTP, DHCP, Domain Controllers, Active Directory applications, print servers and printers, email servers, web servers, SharePoint servers, and FTP services for the company.
- Install, manage, and administer critical databases containing the company’s confidential information, IP address allocation tables, network connections, and other relevant data.
- Ensure secure operation of all servers and services using security and encryption tools such as SSH, SSL, PGP, IPSec, and others.
- Monitor server logs and activities.
- Replace defective parts on servers or PCs.
- Provide second-level technical support to users on various company applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.
- Install, maintain, and update client PCs on a schedule designed to avoid disrupting company activities.
- Assist the System/Network Administrator Class 1 with project updates.
- Regularly meet with IT managers to discuss project updates, priorities, and upcoming developments.
- Manage server access and user permissions, including additions, modifications, and deletions.
- Maintain the integrity of accounts on servers and file server data, performing recovery when necessary.
- Manage server security functions to protect confidential information while allowing appropriate access.
- Coordinate network and server maintenance activities and planning.
- Research, install, and test software updates and patches for applications relying on different operating systems.
- Ensure the proper functioning of the network infrastructure and interconnections between the company’s network components.
- Research new technologies and make recommendations for major hardware and software purchases.
- Maintain hardware and software inventory and document all changes, ensuring these changes' impact is accounted for in the disaster recovery plan.
- Provide technical support for continuous improvement projects.
- Provide coverage for IT departmental functions, replacing staff during vacations, illnesses, training, etc.
- Serve as the webmaster for websites and web applications.
- Participate in certain web development activities.
- Occasionally develop applications and scripts using various programming languages.
- Represent the company in dealings with vendors.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- College diploma in Computer Science or Networking.
- Minimum of five (5) years of IT experience related to network and system administration in a large company.
- Availability for occasional on-call work.
- Experience in system and network administration across various operating systems such as Windows Server, VMware, Unix, DOS, Windows XP, Windows 7, etc. This includes basic and advanced knowledge of servers, domain and workgroup concepts, Active Directory, email, printing, DNS, network configuration, NFS, SCCM, etc. (Intune is an asset).
- Strong experience with different operating systems and server administration.
- Proficiency with all versions of server operating systems, SQL Server database administration, secure web server knowledge, and expertise in C++, Visual C, C#, ASP.NET, Perl, HTML, JavaScript, and other programming languages. Familiarity with scripting languages and backup infrastructures is required.
- Competence in installing operating systems and programs, configuring systems, systematizing security procedures, cryptography tools, and maintaining servers for standard Internet services such as DNS, SMTP, DHCP, email, web, printing, and FTP.
- Experience in a LAN/WAN environment, multi-domain architecture, NTFS/Group Permissions/Network Security, TCP/IP/DHCP/WINS/DNS.
- Experience in server configuration and installation, performance monitoring tools, operating system updates and migrations, and solid troubleshooting skills for both hardware and software.
- Bilingual (French and English).
