Senior Mechanical Designer

Summary

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering (MCAD) Manager, the Mechanical Designer has responsibilities in development and support for avionics products for safety critical and/or military applications. As a key development team member, the successful candidate will be an important contributor involved in the definition, implementation, tests and delivery to production of avionic mechanical systems.  Designs will utilize state of the art technologies while following standard processes to develop solutions that are competitive on a world-class basis and deliver superior performance, quality and capability at aggressive cost targets.

Duties

  • Design of state-of-the-art mechanical assemblies utilizing technologies and tools for high performance environments using process and tools outlined below:
  • Mechanical design of avionic systems
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per industry standards (eg. ASME Y14.5-2018)
  • Creation of solid models.
  • Airflow and thermal analysis and strong modelling capability (Six Sigma ET and Solidworks flow simulation).
  • Mechanical stress and strain analysis and modelling.
  • Shock and vibration analysis (resonance) and test.
  • Mechanical strength and life analysis.
  • Mechanical fatigue and damage tolerance analysis.
  • Rendering (Photoview).
  • Geometrical optical modelling and ray tracing.
  • Report writing.
  •  Utilize CMC development processes and participate in design reviews for key characteristics of performance as well as safety/reliability, test and manufacturability.
  • Front-line support for mechanical issues in production and R&O.
  • Provide documentation for requirements, design descriptions, tests and production support.
  • Support management, systems and manufacturing in various planning or problem solving tasks.
  • May be required to coordinate, prioritize and oversee team member assignments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Eight (8) or more years of industry experience in designing complex mechanical systems.
  • Good communication skills, written and oral, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Independent, self-motivated worker who needs minimal guidance.

Assets

  • Tools and file format familiarity:
  • eCAD, mCAD data exchange, IDF & IDX – Circuitworks.
  • Solidworks, FEA, ProEng, Zemax,  Six-Sigma ET, CATIA
  • Detailed knowledge of Avionics products (Display systems, Sensor systems or Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as a few examples).
  • Knowledge of formal change-control processes in a structured environment.
  • Familiar with DO160 and MIL-STD-810 qualification requirements and processes. Specifically related to thermal, shock, vibration, sand and dust, exposure to avionic fluids and packaging for EMI/EMC performance.
  • Experience with manufacturing methods for different materials (sheet metal, NC machining, injection molding, additive manufacturing, CNC, investment casting, etc.)
  • Experience with design for safety/reliability and flight critical avionics/safety-of-life systems.Proficiency with configuration, documentation (Microsoft Office, Product Center (PDM)
  • Bilingualism (oral and written French and English)
